- Petitioner requests SC to summon PIA officials
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, accusing Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) officials of negligence in ensuring the safety of passengers.
Syed Muhammad Tayyub, the Islamabad District Bar Association president, has filed the petition, claiming PIA operated unsafe aircraft.
“ATR planes have been grounded in several countries due to safety concerns. These aircraft are not only unsafe for mountainous areas and in extreme weather conditions. They are also more prone to accidents,” the petition states.
The petitioner has requested the SC to order the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and PIA to present the record of purchase agreements of aircraft and the detailed record of initiatives undertaken by both institutions for safety and security of passengers.
ATR planes have been used by PIA on intra-country routes such as Gilgit, Bahawalpur, Turban, Gwadar, Zhou and Chitral.
