LAHORE – Defending the action on behalf of all chief selectors, former chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team Inzamam-ul-Haq said that it is critical for chief selectors to accompany the cricketers that they have selected on foreign tours.
Addressing a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, Inzamam said that a chief selector cannot simply be restricted to making the selection and managing the selected back home.
“We cannot just be content with making the selection and managing everything that the selected do. We have to constantly guide them what they can and can’t do, and what they should and shouldn’t say – even when they are abroad,” Inzamam said.
“This is especially true when you’re visiting major countries, superpowers, even if it’s not necessary for all tours. That’s why I travelled with the selected recently,” he added.
The former chief selector did concede that the selectors too sometimes crave the limelight, but give it up in the best interests of the nation.
“Yes, we too want you all to wonder which flight we have taken during foreign tours and how much it is going to cost. But we decide to hide it for the greater interests of the country,” Inzamam added.
