ISLAMABAD – Living up to his reputation as honest and incorruptible, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday night lived up to his pre-election vow as he vowed to go after the “thieves who left the country badly in debt”.
The PM, who addressed the nation after a noisy budget session in the National Assembly and the arrests of the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz, MQM founder Altaf Hussain and former president Asif Ali Zardari, maintained that his job won’t be finished till leaders of the current government are arrested.
The premier announced that after putting to rest the initial focus of the government to stabilise the economy, the government’s attention would be more targeted towards bringing the government to task for causing the country to fall into such dire straits.
“Pakistan is stable now, except for the masses who live in it. Now I will go after the corrupt politicians in this government,” declared the prime minister.
“I’m making a high-powered enquiry commission with a one-point agenda: how did they raise the debt to Rs35 trillion in the past 10 months?”
Pakistan’s public debt and liabilities rose to Rs35.0954 trillion by end-March 2019 from Rs28.879 trillion in June 2018.
The PM said that the commission to probe the incumbent government shall comprise the Federal Investigation Agency, the Intelligence Bureau, the Inter-Services Intelligence, the Federal Board of Revenue and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.
“All those in power will be fully investigated by the commission, and they will prepare a report so that no one ever dares to leave the country in such conditions ever. If the PM is corrupt, the nation can never economically prosper,” the PM added in his address.
PM Khan further said that he is launching a protest against the government at D-Chowk in the capital to continue his revolution.
“But I will simultaneously not be blackmailed by the protests. Even if my life goes, I will not leave these thieves alone. I will not leave them.”
