ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is likely to take strict and relentless action against Sri Lanka cricket legend Sanath Jayasuriya who became one of the most high-profile figures embroiled in corruption after being charged with two counts of disrupting an investigation by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Jayasuriya, a star of the Sri Lanka team that won the 1996 World Cup with a playing career that spanned 22 years, has landed in a controversy after the ICC said the 49-year-old Jayasuriya has been charged with offenses relating to the ‘failure or refusal’ to cooperate with an investigation carried out by its anti-corruption unit, and also for ‘obstructing or delaying’ an investigation.

According to confidential sources, the NAB has proposed to the ICC that it could interrogate Jayasuriya in its own style to get the facts straight. According to the proposal, the anti-graft body has expressed a desired to invite Jayasuria in one of the high-profile corruption cases and take the Sri Lankan player into custody over another case.

When approached for comment, the 49-year-old was glad that, although he has visited Pakistan several times, he was not in the country at present. “Friends in Pakistan tell me that I could be behind bars for as little as threatening to win an election,” he exclaimed with shock.
