Celebrations over Saudi Arabia’s lifting of the ban on women drivers turned sour on Wednesday when authorities revealed that the nation’s women drivers would be only allowed to drive at 4 kilometres per hour.

“Though we might be a progressive nation, we still have our values intact,” said Hani Al Tamahi, spokesperson for the Saudi Arabian government.

“Our culture does not allow us to let our women have unfettered double-digit speeds.”

Matters are further complicated by the fact that the nation’s 14 million women will have to share 7 old Suzuki FX cars between them.

“It is a pretty reasonable 2 million women per car, so I don’t see why this could be a problem,” said Hani Al Tamahi, spokesperson for the Saudi Arabian government.

“We have already designed an effective app modelled on Uber so that the women can place themselves in a queue,” he said.

“That way, whenever there is a requirement, women can press the go button on the app 10 months in advance.”
