The Interior Ministry on Monday issued a notification extending the powers of paramilitary Rangers in Karachi division for another period of 77 days.

The powers have been extended on the request of the Sindh Home Department.

The Rangers launched an operation against militants and criminals in Karachi in 2013.

The federal cabinet had empowered Rangers to lead a targeted action with the support of police against criminals involved in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism in Karachi.

Sindh Rangers were granted special powers to arrest and conduct raids under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

  1. If their presence in the formerly hostage city, Karachi, has not helped the criminally crime ridden and politcized Karachi Police or any improvement in it's performance, this extension would not do any miracle either. How far the Police would fire from Rangers' shoulder ?
