ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the federal government and the Capital Territory Police were all left dumbfounded on Thursday, after jail management confirmed that the air-conditioner in the cell of former President Asif Ali Zarfari was no longer there, well-placed sources have told The Dependent.

The jail management had been informed that the AC from the prison cell of Zardari, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) cochairman, had to be taken out as per the instructions of the federal government. The jail officials informed the Interior Ministry during the early hours of Thursday that the air-conditioner in question wasn’t found once the prison officials had gone inside the cell to take it out.

Further investigation into the disappearance of the AC revealed that it had been sold on OLX, with the transaction leading to its sale being traced to fake bank accounts.

Following the development the NAB has ordered official probe into the matter, with the money trail of the AC’s purchase sought.

According to The Dependent’s separate investigation, among the accounts being linked to the missing AC is the one that is one of the official bank accounts of the Sindh government.

The bank statement of the account in question, available exclusively with The Dependent, reveals the purchase of the Rs35,000 second hand inverter for $40,000 in US dollars, laundered through accounts in Switzerland.
