MANCHESTER – India captain Virat Kohli said that the format of the ongoing World Cup hindered in the progress of his side to the final.
Addressing the press conference after the semifinal defeat against New Zealand, Kohli said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should learn from its mistakes.
“Obviously if India is not playing the final of the World Cup, there is something wrong with the format. The ICC should look into its mistake and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” the Indian skipper said.
The ICC has in the past ditched formats following India’s early exit from the World Cup, most notably in the 2007 edition when India were knocked out in the first round.
“I mean we finished first in a pool where every team played each other. Frankly, we should have been given the World Cup then – if topping the table means anything,” Kohli said.
The Indian captain has suggested a format that would work perfectly in future editions, beginning with 2023.
“I think the next World Cup format should have all other teams in one pool, and the winner of that pool should directly play India in the final – again, if topping the table means anything,” Kohli said
