WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has officially recognised Bahria Town’s sovereignty over the Pakistan Supreme Court. The move was hailed as “historic” by the Bahria Town Chairman Malik Riaz who was by Trump’s side as he signed the proclamation.
The representatives of the Pakistani Constitution said Trump’s decision was “a blatant attack on its sovereignty”. Earlier, Bahria Town had annexed the Supreme Court, in a move that is not recognised internationally.
A spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday he was “clear that the status of the Pakistani Supreme Court has not changed”.
For a long time Washington took the same line as the UN, but last week Trump announced his plan to overturn US policy in a tweet. In response, the Pakistani Constitution has vowed to recover its apex court “through all available means”.
But Malik Riaz told reporters gathered in Washington on Monday that Bahria Town “shall never give it up”.
“Your proclamation comes at a time when the Supreme Court is more important than ever for our security,” he said, citing threats from the Pakistani Constitution.
It is, he added, “a two-fold act of historic justice”.
