Gourmet News Network’s launch sparks concerns of mustard journalism

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE/KARACHI – As Gourmet News Network (GNN) launches across the country, criticis are concerned by the prospect of a unique brand of journalism that Pakistan is yet to see.

Proponents of freedom of expression and media independence fear that GNN could introduce mustard journalism to Pakistani media.

“I’m not suggesting that this is a certainty, but if the inside noise is anything to go by, my sources say that the introduction of mustard in GNN’s brand of journalism is all but confirmed,” a veteran journalist said while talking to The Dependent.

Others are also intrigued by the tools that GNN would bring forth to a media industry that is still shy of experimentation.

“It’s the first time baking ovens and frying pans would be used to convey stories in the country, and we have to wait and see if the nation is ready for that,” another senior media professional told The Dependent.

Meanwhile, other media professionals have cited ‘baking news’ as a unique feature that could give GNN the edge.

“I think most of the criticism is owing to fears of being left behind,” a senior journalist now working at GNN said while talking to The Dependent.

“Of course, it’s not every day that you can get news roundup and dozen eggs at the same place!
