MALLORCA/BASEL/STUTTGART– After winning a record extending 11th Roland Garros title on Sunday, World No 1 Rafael Nadal said he has begun watering clay courts at his home in Mallorca, in the hope of being ready for Wimbledon.

Talking exclusively to The Dependent, Nadal said that his Wimbledon preparation, and even participation, depends on when and if grass grows on his home courts.

“Even though I have done it before, with age it has become difficult to complete the transition from clay to grass,” Nadal said. “The difficulty now is similar to growing grass on clay courts, which is what I am doing now.”

Nadal said he will start preparing for Wimbledon, when grass grows on the courts.

“As you know, it would take time. And even though they have increased the gap between Roland Garros and Wimbledon to three weeks, that’s usually not enough for grass to grow on clay.”

Meanwhile, at the home of defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer who has already started his grass court season, there is no sign of dirt, mud, sand of clay on the tennis courts.

“But of course it’s a lot easier to transform a grass court into clay, than the other way around,” Federer said while talking to The Dependent during the Stuttgart Open.
