ISLAMABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday approved bail for 59 people arrested during last month’s Faizabad sit-in led by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYR).

ATC Judge Shahrukh Arjumand ordered 57 of the men to submit surety bonds worth Rs50,000, while two others were asked to post Rs20,000 for bail.

The men had been arrested in multiple cases, including rioting, destruction of public property and assault on public servants.

The 22-day protest caused severe problems for the residents of the twin cities, resulted in several people losing their lives and left much more with serious injuries.

Among the terms of a much-criticised agreement between the government and protesters, the TLYR leadership had been guaranteed the release of all of their companions without prosecution for their crimes.

Punjab Rangers Director General, Major General Azhar Naveed, was later captured on video handing out Rs1,000 in envelopes to the released protesters to aid them in ‘travelling back home’.
