Audiences seeing the movie should realise that the incoherence shown in Yalghaar is not a result of incompetence in craft but an artistic tool, said the film’s director Dr Hassan Rana at a press conference on Tuesday.
“I have used the incoherence and complete lack of a story structure to show how disparate the process of war is,” said Hassan Rana. “The audience needs to know that. Far from criticising it, they need to appreciate and marvel at the beauty of the craft.”
Addressing another criticism about the sheer expense of the project, Rana said that that was also intentional. “War is expensive. If there’s one public policy implication about war that is clear, this is it,” he said emphatically. “It costs a lot. The budget was padded unnecessarily only because of that. I had to take one for the team, for the greater vision, and spend that myself.”
“I have studied the issue at great length,” said the former academic whose doctorate degree had been called into question by Bahria University, where he was teaching.
“No, I have not studied Thucydides, von Clausewitz or the rest,” he said, in response to a question. “I actually saw action where I learnt this stuff from. The military academy called the battlefield.”
“I mean it. I have played the videogame Battlefield 1,2,3 and 4 many times and am a good, steady shot,” he said.
