The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday dismissed the petition seeking orders for staying holding of local godies (LB) polls in Gujranwala.

“The LB polls are taking place after years. We cannot impede the process of grant of their rights to the people,” the court remarked. “How can we give orders for stopping the LB polls one day before the polls are to be held? We cannot accept the plea in the current situation. If the plea is accepted today then the polls would be stopped and causing misery to the people,” the bench continued.

A three-member bench of the SC presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali took up the case for hearing on Tuesday.

The counsel for the petitioner Abuzar said that injustice had been done with them as her client’s nomination papers had been rejected. She prayed to the court to stop the polls and order printing of new ballot papers.

Justice Qazi Faiz Essa questioned how the ballots could be printed with just one day remaining in the polls.

“Decision was given on October 12 and you approached court on November, 11. This shows that you did not want to file the petition. You saw that others are getting relief so you filed the application. But now, practically one day remains before the polls are held,” the CJP remarked.

Justice Azmat also said that the court would not stop the polls.

The court dismissed the petition.
