Rivers swell after heavy rains

  • Another 20 villages inundated in Layyah, moderate showers likely in Punjab, upper catchment areas

Flood warnings remained in effect along rivers as heavy rain in recent days contributed to flood levels that ranged from minor to major in different parts of the country.

Reportedly, another twenty villages in Layyah city near Chashma Barrage have been inundated due to rise in water level in Indus River. Hundreds of acres of land has been eroded due flood water while locals have moved to safer locations.

Water level is continuously rising at Guddu Barrage.

Authorities have opened 41 out of 52 spillways of Jinnah Barrage after increase in water inflow. There is flood-like situation in River Chenab at Head Panjnad, Head Taunsa and Head Qadirabad.

Residents have been warned to remain vigilant following rise in water level in Palkhu Nullah in Wazirabad. There is also medium level flood in Kabul River at Warsak and Nowshera and River Panjgora at Dir.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological department has forecast rainfall of moderate intensity at isolated places in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, DG Khan, Bahawalpur divisions as well as upper catchment areas of all the major rivers during the next 24 hours.

According to weather report on Monday, a seasonal low lies over northwest Balochistan while Sunday`s trough of westerly wave over Kashmir and adjoining areas continues to persist.
