‘Hydrant mafia’ in Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has successfully got legal approval to install two more hydrants in the water-scarce city.
Reports on Sunday revealed that the new hydrants will be installed at Jamia Karachi reservoir and Northern By-pass areas and Water and Sewerage Board will have to bear loss of hundreds of million rupees.
It has also been revealed that Deputy Managing Director (MD) of the board hid the file from the managing director in order to keep MD water board unaware from the situation.
This step of water board has increased possibility of water scarcity in central areas of the city during the upcoming summer season.
Local Bodies (LB) Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inaam Memon has resolved to eliminate all illegal hydrants from the city but ‘hydrant mafia’ has also become active to save vested interests.
Sources said that Deputy MD Najam Alam had approved hydrant under water board reservoir in front of Jamia Karachi by the name of Imran Bunty while a person namely, Abdullah, has also been given approval to install hydrant near Northern By-pass project.
It is significant to mention that Imran Bunty’s hydrant established in Mehmoodabad locality of the port city was bulldozed last year and but Najam Alam suggested him to install the above-said hydrant.
The sources added if water hydrant was established along with KarachiUniversity reservoir, it would affect Nazim Abad, Federal B area, Aziz Abad, Gulistan-e-Johar and Gulistan-e-Iqbal areas of the city.
