The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Wednesday announced a state of the art E-Driving License for the National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP), which would ensure security, authenticity and traceability. It would also help the NH&MP to facilitate applicants in procuring their driver license by reducing the turnaround time.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik said that the NH&MP was trying to accommodate the common man and simultaneously ensure that driver licenses are given only to applicants going through a proper training process. This would ensure road safety and minimum accidents.

He said that the proposed system entailed a Teslin Card Driver’s License which allowed issuance of new drivers’ licenses and renewals. It would also ensure the registration of applicants and provide information to NH&MP enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, NH&MP Inspector General (IG) Zafar Iqbal Lak said that the project aimed to serve each stakeholder as citizens would also benefit from the E-Driving License.

The IG said that the system would minimise errors created by manual data entry; increase staff productivity and improve decision making.

NADRA’s chairman further mentioned that they are working on the system for greater automation and technological efficiency which would seek to improve queue management and save time. According to the plan, the project’s pilot site shall be established in the capital and more sites would follow as the project grows.

Both IG NH&MP and Chairman NADRA said that they would collaborate in implementing the Vehicle Identification Number to reduce the use of vehicles for theft, terrorism and crime by enforcing registration of vehicles data and issuance of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The implementation of VIN would subsequently facilitate the Vehicle Tracking System.
