Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has taken suo motu notice of the bombing on the Hazara community in Quetta.

The attorney general of Pakistan and the advocate general of Balochistan have been summoned to the Supreme Court on Tuesday where the case would be heard in an open court.

The Hazara community has been subjected to several attacks in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan. On Saturday, at least 89 members of the community, including women and children, were killed when a deadly bomb ripped through a vegetable market on Kirani Road. Earlier, tragic incidents of powerful explosions had occurred in Quetta, one at Bacha Khan Road and another on Alamdar Road on January 10, causing carnage and resulting in the death of more then 93 persons with 120 injured.

The incidents caused a furore among the Hazara Shia Community, not only in Quetta but across the country. The situation became critical, and ultimately governor’s rule was imposed in Balochistan on January 14 which is still continuing.

It is pertinent to mention here that following the latest attack, the Hazara community is staging a sit-in alongside the dead bodies of the victims on Alamdar Road in Quetta. The vice president of the Majlis-e-Wahadat-e-Muslimeen, Amin Shaheedi, said that the victims of the blast would not be buried and nationwide protests would continue unless restrictions were placed on banned organisations and the control of Quetta was handed over to the army.
