PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain did not return empty handed from the MQM Headquarters Nine Zero late on Wednesday, as he was successful in breaking the ice between both estranged coalition partners – the MQM and PPP.
A source privy to the details of the talks between Shujaat and MQM Rabita Committee told Pakistan Today that Shujaat urged the MQM leadership to review their decision to leave the treasury benches and as a confidence-building measure (CBM), Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan should withdraw his resignation if the party could not return to the government fold immediately.
“During the meeting, Shujaat also proposed the MQM leaders to start a dialogue with the PPP to restore peace in the troubled city of Karachi. He said President Asif Ali Zardari was sincere with the MQM and he wanted the party to return to the coalition,” the source said.
Dr Farooq Sattar told Shujaat that it was not possible for his party to accept the governorship of Sindh as this would compel the people to think that the MQM’s stance on targeted killings in Karachi was a farce and it was fooling the public. He said the MQM workers wanted to remain calm but targeted killings of their people could trigger lingual and racial riots, the source said.
However, he said that during the talks, the second-tier leadership of the MQM took a hard stance and former Karachi nazim Mustafa Kamal, Waseem Aftab and others said there was no possibility of their party holding dialogue with the PPP. He said President Zardari himself was behind a conspiracy against the MQM.
“However, Dr Farooq Sattar, Raza Haroon, Nasreen Jalil and others assured Shujaat that the Rabita Committee would review its decision if they weren’t pushed against the wall. They also said the Sindh government should release all the 70 MQM workers arrested in the past three days and targeted killing of Urdu-speaking people had ended,” he added. Upon his arrival at Nine Zero, the MQM had arranged a meeting of MQM workers targeted by miscreants in Karachi with Shujaat and his colleagues, the source said, adding that the affected people briefed Shujaat about the atrocities committed against their families by criminals.
Later, the source added, Shujaat and his colleagues were shown a video of targeted attacks on the houses of Urdu-speaking citizens. This was followed by dialogue with the MQM Rabita Committee members, which ended on a positive note, added the source.
MQM spokesman Wasay Jalil confirmed the information obtained by Pakistan Today, saying his party had urged Shujaat to play his role in bringing peace to Karachi.
