LAHORE – Ajoka presented ‘Kala Maida Bhes’, a play based on the true story of a Sindhi woman who was exchanged for an ox, at Al-Hamra on Thursday. The play, written by Shahid Nadeem and directed by Madeeha Gauhar, is set in a village in the Cholistan desert where drinking water is scarce and the powerful and exploitative “peer” (spiritual chief) controls the only well.
The storyline revolves around the emotions of the woman who has been exchanged. The barrenness of the protagonist Sundri is reflected in the aridity of the desert and juxtaposed with water symbolizing fertility. Ajoka brought out the ethical and moral stance on the issue by venturing into the conflict zone with the help of lighting sequences and symbolic surrealism. Another Ajoka play, Dukh Darya will be presented today.
