Ministry stresses research to avert future disasters

ISLAMABAD – The Ministry for Environment’s Core Group on Climate Change held its meeting on Wednesday with Secretary for Environment, Muhammad Javaid Malik in the chair.
Issues pertaining to climate change were deliberated and former state minister for environment Malik Amin Aslam gave a presentation on National Environment and Economic Development and highlighted environmental situation of the country and its impact on the economy. Participants also gave recommendations and proposals.
According to an official, the Core Group on Climate Change is formed to help Pakistan prepare for serious challenges related to climate change and global warming. “The recent floods that wreaked havoc in the country have highlighted the need for the country’s environment managers to come up with recommendations to prevent disasters in the future,” he said, adding that the group will soon compile its research.
A statement issued by the ministry of environment said the recent Conference of Parties (CoP-16) summit held in Cancun, Mexico, was also an important agenda of the core group meeting. Several issues related to CoP-16 were also shared and reviewed. The participants were of the view that CoP-16 was an important platform for climate change awareness in Pakistan.
Additional Secretary Kamran Ali Qureshi, Director General (Environment) Javaid Ali Khan, Managing Director (ENERCON), Farid Ullah Khan, Dr Aurangzeb, Dr Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, Dr Pervaiz Ameer, Ali Tauqeer Sheik and representatives of UN Agencies and Environmental Experts were present on the occasion.
