Leaders in corruption

According to the Transparency International, Pakistan has slipped to 34th position in 2010 from 42nd position in 2009 in the list of the most corrupt nations. This makes us a partner in the top 19 percent corrupt countries amongst 178 countries of the world.

Even the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has confirmed that corruption has risen by leaps and bounds as the records show. The rental power projects, which added only 68 MW of electricity after spending 20 billion rupees, are the best example of this corruption. The Supreme Court is currently looking into this matter and would give a decision irrespective of its impacts.

Other examples include privatization bid of Pakistan Steel Mills, purchase of defective railway engines and dubious railway land deals in Lahore. It appears our Supreme Court is the only hope in cleansing the body politic of corruption at highest levels. But how long the court can do so and why dont our politicians learn any lesson?
