Radiation spikes in seawater by stricken Japan plant
TOKYO - Radioactivity levels are soaring in seawater near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant, Japan's nuclear safety agency said on Saturday, two weeks after the nuclear power plant was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami. Even as engineers tried to pump puddles of radioactive water from the power plant 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, the nuclear safety agency said tests on Friday showed radioactive iodine had spiked 1,250 times higher than normal in the seawater just
Radioactive iodine 1,250 times over limit in sea off Japan’s plant
TOKYO - The operator of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan has detected radioactive iodine 1,250.8 times above legal limit in sea near the plant.
The level jumped to its highest so far in the survey begun this week, Tokyo Electric Power Co said.
According to the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the readings were taken Friday morning about 330 meters south of the plant, near the drain outlets of the reactors at the utility.

Radiation worries grow at Japanese plant
TOKYO - Smoke and steam rose from two of the most threatening reactors at Japan's quake-crippled nuclear plant on Tuesday, suggesting the battle to avert a disastrous meltdown and stop the spread of radiation was far from won. The world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years was triggered by a huge earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left at least 21,000 people dead or missing. Japan weighs need to bury nuclear plant; tries to restore power
TOKYO - Japanese engineers conceded on Friday that burying a crippled nuclear plant in sand and concrete may be a last resort to prevent a catastrophic radiation release, the method used to seal huge leakages from Chernobyl in 1986. But they still hoped to solve the crisis by fixing a power cable to two reactors by Saturday to restart water pumps needed to cool overheating nuclear fuel rods. Workers also sprayed water on the No.3 reactor, the most critical of the plant's six.
