PK-661 crash: Junaid Jamshed’s body identified, confirms DC Islamabad

The body of singer-turned-cleric Junaid Jamshed, who lost his life in PIA’s December 7 air crash, was identified on Monday with the help of dental and facial x-rays.

“The body was identified with the help of samples from teeth and x-rays of his face,” said Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Capt (r) Mushtaq Ahmed.

The singer-turned-religious scholar was travelling from Chitral to Islamabad in flight PK-661 when the aircraft crashed near Abbottabad, killing all 48 people on board.

Addressing the media outside his residence in Karachi, Humayun Jamshed said, they would wait for DNA results till Wednesday, following which they will bring Junaid’s body to Karachi.

“We will wait for DNA results which are likely to come by Wednesday, following which we will bring Junaid’s body to Karachi.” Humayun further announced that Junaid’s funeral prayers will be offered at Moin Khan Academy Ground, Karachi.

“As per Junaid’s wishes, he will be buried at Darul Uloom Korangi Karachi,” Humayun added.

Earlier, the remains of at least 23 victims of the PK-661 plane crash near Havelian were transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad for DNA testing.

The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed there were no survivors from the ill-fated flight.

The remains of the victims will be handed over to their surviving relatives after identification.

The passenger list confirmed there were 31 men, 9 women and 2 infants on board the flight, including singer-cum-evangelist Junaid Jamshed and his family, as well as three foreigners.

The ATR-42 aircraft departed from Chitral at around 3:30pm and was expected to land at Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport at around 4:40pm but crashed in Havelian near Abbottabad shortly after a distress call was sent to the control tower.
