ISLAMABAD: Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari on Wednesday said that her ministry has recommended the education ministry to revise the curriculum of minorities and add human rights as a compulsory subject in the syllabus.

Talking to APP, the minister said that non-Muslim communities in Pakistan were practising their own religious laws just like they would in Europe.

She said that in this connection, the syllabus of ethics should also be revised according to their religion.

“The subject of Islamiyath is being taught to minorities in Gilgit Baltistan (GB), we should teach them the subject of ethics rather than Islamic studies,” she said.

She also said that the course being taught to minorities should be based on social and moral teachings in order to prepare them for the challenges ahead.

“The prime minister has also recommended teaching human rights and environmental studies as compulsory subjects in the syllabus,” she said.

She further said that it was the human rights ministry’s responsibility to demonstrate how the material course applies to minorities.
