Peshawar among five highly sensitive KP districts in Muharram

PESHAWAR: As the holy and first month of the Islamic calendar is starting from Saturday, the district administrations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have started beefing up security measures to avert any untoward incident in connection with Muharram processions and Majalis.

According to official sources, the Home Department has directed all district governments to chalk out a security plan for peaceful observance of Muharram ul Haram’s Majalis and processions. It was told that five districts including DI Khan, Tank, Kohat, Hangu and Peshawar have been declared highly sensitive across the province, while nine were declared sensitive.

The sources said that Pakistan Army, FC, Frontier Constabulary would be deployed to assist police for ensuring the security of Imam Barghas and Muharram processions. In order to cope with any emergency, the vacation of Rescue-1122 and police would be canceled.

Meanwhile, District Police Officer Dera Zahoor Baber Afridi presided over a high-level meeting and finalized arrangements for Muharram ul Haram. He said that all available resources would be utilized to foil nefarious designs of anti-state elements.

He said that civil administration, police, Pak Army and other security forces would perform Muharram security duties. He appealed local people and Ulemas to play their role in peaceful observance of Muharram processions which are held every year to remember sacrifices of the grandson of Holy Prophet (PBUH) Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) their family members and accomplices.
