RAWALPINDI: Family members of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders arrived at Adiala Jail on Friday to meet the former premier and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

Party leaders and family members had previously submitted a request to meet Nawaz and Maryam, who are currently serving their sentences in Avenfield case at Adiala Jail.

According to reports, the permission was granted and the jail superintendent was informed over the matter.

While Thursday was previously assigned for visits, Eid holidays prevented visitors from meeting the former prime minister and his daughter. As such, permission to visit on Friday was sought.

According to reports, Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and close members of the family met Nawaz and Maryam on Wednesday on the occasion of Eidul Azha.

On Friday, a total of 47 visitors, including family members of Nawaz, former National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq, former foreign minister Khawaja Asif, Pervez Rasheed, Mussadiq Malik, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Raja Zafarul Haq and Daniyal Aziz met the former premier and Maryam.

Strict security arrangements were made by the authorities ahead of the meeting. Only those whose names were on the list of visitors were allowed to enter the jail premises by the officials.

“I have come to meet Nawaz today as we weren’t allowed to the past two days,” said Asif while speaking to media.

“I will not talk about anything related to the presidential election or politics,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz are currently serving 11 and eight-year prison terms at Adiala Jail, respectively.

It is pertinent to note that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had deferred petitions filed by the convicted members of the Sharif family seeking suspension of the accountability court’s July 6 verdict till after summer vacations.

After hearing the case at length for days, reprimanding and fining the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for wasting its time, the IHC division bench comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, said: “at this stage we are not inclined to decide these petitions and they shall remain pending and fixed along with the appeals.”
