A little downpour on Monday night crippled the Lahore Electric Supply Company’s (LESCO) electricity system, as people suffered long hours of closures.
There were long hours of closure during the whole day on Monday and after a few showers, problems of consumers increased. LESCO officials in different sub-divisions kept closing electricity with repeated intervals. Load shedding also continued on Tuesday making the lives of citizens miserable, as unscheduled load shedding of one to two hours was witnessed in the city.
Adding to miseries of citizens, LESCO also closed some grid stations. Earlier, LESCO claimed that electricity was closed due to extra burden on the system and use of air conditioners. “We have to close grid stations to save the entire distribution system of the city,” LESCO Public Relations Director Javed Ahmed Khan said.
But the little downpour also resulted in closures. “Use of air conditioners decreases sharply with rain but even then LESCO closed electricity,” citizen Farooq Ahmed said adding that LESCO only needs reasons to close electricity of the city. All areas of the city including Model Town, Allama Iqbal Town, Johar Town, Township, Rehmanpura, Garden Town, the Walled City and Cantt suffered continuous power closures. In some areas, electricity was restored early in the morning. Consumers criticized LESCO for failing to provide them electricity.
Electrical Engineer Faisal Manzoor said that the distribution system of the city has failed to sustain the load. He said that it is failure of LESCO that it did not upgrade its installation and transmission system. “If there is extra usage of air conditioners then electricity is closed and if there is light rain even then there is no power,” he lamented.
