Jinnah International Airport is attacked

 

The Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan is attacked on June 8, 2014. 36 people, including the 10 attackers are killed. Military strikes were launched by the Pakistan Armed Forces immediately after the attacks, killing scores of militants. Within a week of the attack, Operation Zarb-e-Azb was announced.

 


USS Liberty incident

 

The US Navy technical research ship USS Liberty is attacked by Israeli Air Force and Navy on June 8, 1967 during the Six Day War. The ship was severely damaged while 36 US service members were killed. Another 171 were injured in the attack. The USS Liberty was in International waters at the time of the attack. Israel issued apologies to the US over the incident and claimed the ship was mistaken to be an Egyptian vessel. Subsequent US and Israeli investigations concluded that the attack was launched by mistake.

 


1984 is published

On of the most iconic books of the 20th century – 1984 by George Orwell, is published on June 8, 1949.

 


 

 

The ‘Napalm Girl’ picture is taken by AP (Associated Press) Photographer Nick Ut on June 8, 1972. The nine-year-old in the picture, Phan Thi Kim Phuc, was running away after being burnt by a South Vietnamese napalm attack. The picture later won the Pulitzer Prize.
