ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbassi’s Parliamentary address in which targeted the judiciary was a clear violation of his constitutional mandate as well as the oath he took for office, said former federal minister Muhammad Ali Durrani on Tuesday.

Addressing the media, he said, “Parliament should refrain from becoming a party to a person-centric feud as the misuse of the legislative authority in favour of a person would prove to be a political suicide.”

Responding to a question, he said that the Parliament has every right to legislate, however, making legislature a party in direct confrontation with another constitutional organ of state namely the judiciary was a disservice to the country and democracy.

“Parliamentary leaders need to play their role prudently by stopping PM Abbasi from turning a family’s vindictiveness into a tug of war among state institutions,” he said.

Responding to another question, he said, “It is the constitutional as well as legal domain and authority of the judiciary to interpret law and Constitution to determine whether someone is guilty of loot and plunder or not and no one else can do that.”

Durrani said that it appeared that PM Abbasi was on a quest to prove himself as a loyalist of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) rather than the state and the Constitution.

He further said that PM Abbasi must realise the fact that after assuming the highest office, his loyalty and duty was towards the Constitution and the state and not the party and its head. Any compromise on that principle would lead to political chaos and anarchy, which Pakistan could not afford in the current scenario, he added.
