The Open Society Foundations (OSF), an organisation that strives to build vibrant and tolerant democracies, on Saturday announced a human rights scholarship to honour late Asma Jahangir, a Pakistani lawyer and rights activist.

OSF Pakistan Country Director Saba Gul Khattak made the announcement at the inauguration ceremony of Mother Languages Literature Festival held in Islamabad.

On the occasion, she said, “Since Asma Jahangir was a member of our international board, we have decided to honour her by announcing a scholarship for human rights research.” She also said that details about the scholarship would be shared with the media once the process was finalised by the organisation.

“Asma’s death has been both shocking and sad for us and we would try to keep her memory alive through our initiatives,” Khattak said.

Asma Jahangir passed away in Lahore on February 11 after suffering a cardiac arrest and was buried in her family’s farmhouse in the same city.
