Social media pretty much dominates everyone’s lives nowadays. While it is mostly a platform to be ‘social’, it is proving to be a power platform to propel changes such as the #MeToo movement which saw thousands of woman speak out about their encounters with sexual harassment.

When a leading news channel asked Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has stayed away for the enticing web of social media, about how the technology is used for empowerment of women as well, the actress stated, “What’s happening currently, and I don’t think it’s just this year or the last 2-3 years, is that the world is becoming smaller and smaller. Social Media and technology are opening up so many avenues of communication; it’s making your reach in a split second so immense. That’s why you are recognizing and feeling the strength. It’s great that people are recognizing the potential of these platforms and are coming out there and expressing themselves and strengthening empowerment. Empowerment has existed but it is getting strengthened and fortified. I think that is a very positive trend and that to me is the biggest advantage of all the medias of communication and social media, especially.”

However, she added “It can also be the undoing if, interestingly, social media makes you anti-social. That’s something I don’t get. I think you should use it for its strength and not get drowned in it for its capacity to isolate as well and make you just an individual and cease to be a people’s person.”

Aishwarya will next be seen in Atul Manjrekar’s Fanne Khan which also stars Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Divya Dutta. Fanne Khan is slated for a June 2018 release.
