KARACHI:  Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah on Thursday said party’s Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari will hold a meeting with Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri in Lahore later today (Thursday).

Speaking to media in Islamabad, Shah said that the party delegation is meeting with the PAT chief on the latter’s invitation to Zardari.

“There is nothing new about the meeting and the two parties have been in contact previously too,” said the opposition leader in the National Assembly.

“We stood against [former military dictator] Musharraf together in 2002,” he added.

He, however, added that PPP has always stayed away from street politics and politics of anarchy.

A private media outlet reported that PPP leaders Qamar Zaman Kaira, Dr Qayyum Soomro and Shah will also attend the meeting.

The report further stated that Zardari has contacted the PAT chief to discuss the Justice Baqir Najafi commission on the 2014 Model Town incident. The two also agreed to bring those responsible for the incident to justice.

The Punjab government on the orders of the Lahore High Court (LHC) made the Model Town enquiry report public, blaming the provincial government, including Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, and police for the 2014 incident in which 14 supporters of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) were killed.

Rana Sanaullah rejected the enquiry report, saying it was “ineffective” and “full of errors”.

Qadri, however, in a press conference on Wednesday termed the provincial government claims that the report does not blame any government official as false propaganda.
