KARACHI: University of Karachi (KU) Center of Excellence for Women Studies on Tuesday organized a seminar and poster exhibition for awareness and prevention of violence against women.

KU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan speaking at the seminar stated that the working women lack proper status and facilities in the work environment.  He regretted the practice of highly educated women, not playing a role in the development of the country due to doubts over their personal safety.

The vice-chancellor stressed the importance of education, through which a woman becomes fully aware of her legal rights and negative norms in the society are combated.

The vice-chancellor further lauded the efforts of Dr Nasreen Aslam Shah and KU students organising the seminar, adding that such events must be held regularly. He also inaugurated the poster exhibition held at the gathering.

“Proper training of women must be ensured; we will hold training of our students in this regard at the end of this semester,” Dr Nasreen Aslam Shah said.

Superintendent Police (SP) Shehla Qureshi also participated in the programme and said that women must be provided adequate awareness to empower them.

Director Women Complaint Cell Tahmina Rehman and Saddam Tufail Hashmi discussed different forms of violence against women and its possible remedies.

Students of women’s studies also distributed brochures related to women harassment on the occasion.
