KARACHI: Rumours of Congo virus outbreak in Karachi at the time when a large number of dengue fever cases have been reported across the province have panicked the residents and the Sindh Health Department.
A private TV news channel ran a report quoting Sindh Health Department sources that two Crimean-Congo heamorrhagic fever patients have been admitted to a private hospital. “We have not been able to confirm the news,” said Saleem Khan, the Sindh Health Department’s public relation officer.
The channel also reported that the private hospital had established two isolation wards for the Congo virus patients. The president of the Pakistan Society for Microbiologists and pro-vice chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof Shahana Urooj said that the chance of a congo virus outburst could not be disregarded as livestock was coming in from all over the country for Eid-ul-Azha.
Butchers, doctors, nurses and pathologists can easily be infected by the virus as it is transmitted to humans through the animals’ blood. She said that Congo fever virus is tick-borne and is transmitted to humans through infected tick bites, which is rare and usually the virus spreads through the blood of an infected animal.
Symptoms of the Congo virus include fever, acute pain in the belly and the dripping of blood from nose, mouth and urine.
