KARACHI: A large number of television sets, LCDs, air coolers and other such electronic devices have been recovered from Central Jail Karachi during an operation that was initiated on Sunday night and continued until Monday morning. The operation was carried out following the recent escape of prisoners.
According to the jail police, the barracks of Lyari gang war and banned outfit prisoners were also searched among other quarters. During the ongoing search, hundreds of mobile phones, television sets, tape recorders, air coolers, knives and pliers were recovered from the premises. The joint search operation was launched by Rangers, police and FC personnel.
Moreover, Rs0.7 million were also recovered from a prisoner’s possession, sources said.
The sources are also reported yo have said that strict action would be taken against the personnel who would be found involved in keeping such devices in the jail. Besides, banned outfit prisoners would not be allowed to meet visitors.
The operation was conducted after two members of banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi managed to escape Central Jail Karachi recently. The two prisoners were undergoing a trial and were present in the jail’s judicial complex for a hearing when they managed to escape, stated an official.
Subsequently, 12 police personnel, including the jail superintendent and deputy jail superintendent, were arrested upon Sindh law and prisons minister’s orders. Moreover, a case was also registered in New Town police station against the 12 police personnel arrested in the case.
The two suspects were arrested by the Counter Terrorism Department in 2013 over their alleged involvement in multiple cases of target killings.
As per sources, the incident occurred despite a rehearsal that had been carried out in the jail by security officials three days prior to the incident.
