RAWALPINDI: Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) Managing Director Raja Shoukat Mahmood Monday inspected the ongoing dredging and cleanliness work of Nullah Lai and directed the authorities to focus on points near the bridges.
Sewerage Director Hamad Fazal while briefing the MD informed that work
started in the last week of April from Katarian Bridge and has been completed in the areas of Katarian, Dhoke Naju, Pakwari, Dhoke Dalal, Pirwadhai and Ganjmandi bridge; while dredging and cleanliness are continuing at Ratta and Gawalmandi Bridge locations.
He said solid waste, mud and big boulders have been removed from various points near the bridges and hurdles hampering the flow of water have been cleared by heavy machinery.
So far, 80 percent of the task has been completed while the remaining work would be done within the stipulated timeframe, he added.
The director said the waste removed from the Nullah is being shifted out of the city through dumpers. The MD instructed WASA officials to clear all sections near the bridges at Nullah Lai especially the most vulnerable points because in monsoon these points are submerged in water and cause a flood.
He also directed to complete cleanliness work of all sewerage lines of the city so that flood water could not inundate low-lying areas and the residents could be protected from devastating floods.
