The fate of HEC

The government has finally taken a step to dissolve the HEC and transfer its authority to the provincial governments. This includes planning, curriculum, policy making and quality control. Provincial governments, due to unavailability of resources, are even unable to handle HSC and SSC level education properly.

The question arises then how they are going to manage this higher education system altogether. The government before taking such a hasty decision should have assessed the ability of provincial governments. Even lawyers like Rafay Alam are saying that such a system has worked for the USA and should work for Pakistan as well. Mr Alam is comparing the US society with ours which is not justified. However, the government through the 18th amendment had protected the HEC, yet it has decided to devolve it. It would be much better to have a federal body that handles the tasks of the HEC at the centre to ease the tension and help the academia.
