This is apropos of the column by Ejaz Haider on the education emergency report. The writer correctly points out that the quality of education and curriculum is as important as the number of people being educated. But this does not take way from the fact that we indeed have an education emergency at hand and many people cannot attend school even if they want to. If we want to reform our educational structure to produce schooled literates, we need to have an educational structure to begin with. The education sector is in shambles with private schools operating alongside public schools and madrassah on the side for good measure. The sector not only needs reform but funding as a recent report also detailed that we spend 7 times as much on arms as we do on education. While the author makes a valid point, it should not trivialise the findings of the Pakistan Education Taskforce report which has highlighted an important issue.
