The decision of the Punjab government that there would be only one weekly holiday from 27th November does not sit well with the international standard of working hours. The government offices in Pakistan work for 48 hours a week while it is 40 hours a week all over the world.

This change in the rule affects the employees in many ways. It makes them sluggish, tardy, exhausted, burned out and reactive.

To base the decision on the winter and summer timing in the country, or to save energy, is a not a solid logic. If the advanced world can make progress with just 40 hours a week, why are we not making comparable progress with 48 hours of work in a week? The solution lies with efficiently utilising the available time rather than increasing the number of work hours. This efficient utilisation can be ensured by monitoring punctuality and making the workplace environment more dynamic and conducive to work.
