Railways in need

It takes more than courage to accept ones mistakes. This practice is not found in the most of the general public nor is it evident in the government machinery. The recent issue of increasing the Pakistan Railways (PR) fares is a classic example of this point.

Though one of the largest public organizations in Pakistan, it is running in loss continuously for years despite having an unbelievable share of land holdings and human resources. It is a source of cheap transportation for millions of people on a daily basis. Trains are also the best mode for cargo, oil and heavy machinerys movement over land. The only solution is to invite private sector to invest and run parallel to the national corporation.

The government must look into the shady PR land deals, allegations of corruption, mismanagement, scrap scandal, and financial irregularities.

Even in this modern day world, the government must have control over certain aspects of the national life. Defence, economy, foreign relations and communications are the main responsibilities that the government must perform. Otherwise, national security and pivotal national interests might be at risk. This is why the government must have a stake in the affairs of PR, which has become a burden on the national kitty.
