The troubling increase in mob violence should be taken note of by the government. While this calls for national introspection at many levels, something that is even more worrying is the complicity of police authorities with such heinous crimes. Most of the cases that have surfaced point out that the police was a silent witness to these crimes and was unable and/or unwilling to intervene and put a stop to such arbitrary violence.
It is sad to see this in a country like Pakistan where the police force has many powers under the Police Order and regularly uses these very powers to make itself a nuisance for the common people. The higher-ups should immediately look into why the police force is acting like a feeble and meek bystander rather than doing its job and protecting the people. It is its duty and it should execute it with sincerity. It is not too much to ask of it.
