Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has denied that she is the “de-facto Prime Minister” of the country in absence of her ailing father, saying rumours in this regard are “over-glorified to say the least”.
Talking to Pakistan Today Editor Arif Nizami in his talkshow DNA on Channel 24 on Thursday, Maryam said her father had tasked her with some responsibilities in the party and that her role is limited to just that.
“Whenever my assistance is required I’m always there because I love my party. However, rumours that I’m the ‘de facto Prime Minister’ are over-glorified to say the least”.
“My emotional attachment and devotion to my father rendered me unable to see my father in a condition where he’s frail and not in power,” she said.
Talking about the possible successor of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam said that the family is yet to discuss this topic. “My father’s health condition is improving steadily and he’s going to continue leading his party and his followers for many years,” she said.
Talking about her father’s detractors, Maryam said: “The ones questioning his surgery and calling it an attempt to gain sympathy have a very low caliber. Even the worst of enemies get quiet if their opponents are going through serious health issues. I only wish the ones saying these things won’t have to go through these challenging circumstances. I can only pray for their guidance.”
She said that her father was getting better gradually.
“He did some walk, as per what the doctors allowed him, and the doctors and surgeons are satisfied with his current state of health,” she said, adding that she thinks that the PM will be back in Pakistan before the end of Ramzan.
“He underwent a major surgery and the doctors advised him at least three to four weeks of rest and I feel he’s entitled to that rest. Once he’s fully fit he’ll be back,” she said.
