In a surprise move, the Punjab government is pondering over increasing the number of deputy mayors by amending the Local Government Ordinance.

A committee headed by Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and comprising MNA Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, the Punjab chief secretary and local government secretary has finalised the proposal of increasing the number of vice chairperson or deputy mayors especially in Lahore

When contacted Punjab Election Commissioner Malik Masud Ahmad, he said, “So far my office has not been informed about the amendment in Local Government Law and Secretary Local Government has not conveyed such progress to my office.”

Commenting on the move, Supreme Court Bar Association Vice President Azam Nazir Tarrer said it is illegal to increase the number of deputy mayors after the LG elections. He said government would face criticism in this regard.

Talking to Pakistan Today, renowned lawyer Azar Saddique said the government’s move is just post-polls rigging since the government wants to accommodate the persons belonging to PML-N. He termed the move as unconstitutional.
