KARACHI:

Karachi heatwave death toll rose to 1,011, with at least 229 fatalities reported on Wednesday by government and private hospitals, reports stated.

Officials said that about 40,000 people had suffered heatstroke and as many as 7,500 were being treated in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where 311 people died, reportedly.

“More than 1,000 of the 40,000 heatstroke victims have died since Saturday evening, of which 950 deaths were reported in Karachi alone,” said a senior official.

According to the figures collected from various hospitals, of the 950 deaths in Karachi, 729 were recorded in government-run health facilities and 221 in private hospitals.

The officials said the number of patients arriving in hospitals had ‘significantly’ dropped with the weather getting better, yet there were thousands of patients being treated in different health facilities.

People, youths in particular, continued to donate medicines, juices and bottled water to patients as well as hospitals.

  1. It is a big tragedy and selfishness of our political elite especially from Karachi, Sind and federal govt, bureaucracy and PML, MQM, PPP and ANP the large 4 parties. In case of regular drought years if it came which is possibly after 50-60 years in our history then it will be a big catastrophe for 200 million people of Pakistan. The drought used to happen after loss of monsoon in July / August. The last drought was in 1943-1944 in which 50 lac people died. similarly a drought in 1770-1773 in which one third of Begal population was vanished. We must be very serious about water storage reservoirs otherwise any missing monsoon will eat human being in Indo Pak areas. It is high time for the people and govt of Pakistan to do all possible efforts to construct reservoirs as early as possible. The Basha dam and Dasu Hydro power will resolve the power and water shortage problem. We must act now otherwise it will be too late to avoid human losses in our country. We have big capacity rivers but we are not deciding any good for us. Please act swiftly other wise it will vanish many of us.
