IGP asked to nab ICCI president’s attackers in 3 days

Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) has asked Islamabad Capital Territory Inspector General Tahir Alam Khan to investigate and take action within three days against those police officials who attacked on its ICCI President Shaban Khalid on the night of September 13.

Addressing a press conference at Chamber House, Shaban Khalid briefed the journalists about the unfortunate incident which took place on the night of September 13, 2013 when he going from on Margalla Road in his car to purchase some medicines and had to stop at a police barrier set up right before the Daman-e-Koh Traffic Light.

Some 40-50 police officials were present at the barrier and were picking up people to stuff them in prisoner buses. During this process, the police also misbehaved with him and even dragged him out of the car to take him to prisoner bus despite the fact that he informed them that he was sitting ICCI president.

But they did not pay any heed to his pleas and smashed windowpanes of his car and manhandled him. He said if President ICCI was treated this way, what would be the police behaviour with common citizens.

Founder Group Chairman Abdul Rauf and FPCCI Vice President Munawar Mughal also strongly condemned the police misbehaviour with ICCI president and demanded that IG, ICT should order for thorough investigation and take strong action against the responsible police officials within three days otherwise, ICCI in consultation with all the chambers of commerce and industry of the country will formulate its future strategy in the matter.

They said ICCI is a neutral trade body established to serve the cause of the local business community and it has no affiliation with any political party.

ICCI has great credibility and reputation and manhandling of its president is a direct attack on this esteemed institution. They said ICT Police should be directed not to repeat any such incident in future otherwise, the whole business community would stand united to protect its rights.

All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran President Ajmal Baloch also strongly condemned the police attack on ICCI president and demanded immediate action against the responsible persons. He said many innocent traders have been arrested by the police in recent days and said that IG, ICT should devise a mechanism in consultation with local business leaders to avoid such unfortunate incidents as they create lot of harassment in the business community. Former presidents of ICCI and presidents of market associations were also present at the occasion.

All chambers of commerce of the country have already condemned this incident and expressed strong solidarity with ICCI.
