Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry on Friday said that 226 out of a total of 300 Pakistani detainees have been released from Libyan jails since March 2014.
In a press statement, the foreign office state that “While the ongoing evacuation operation for bringing back the thousands of stranded Pakistanis in Libya is in full swing, due attention is also being paid to obtain the release of detained Pakistani nationals in Libya. Since March 2014, out of a total number of 300 detainees, release of 226 detainees has been ensured.”
“This figure is unprecedented, both, if compared with previous figures of release of Pakistani prisoners in the past, as well as in comparison to any other expatriate community in Libya,” it added.
The statement further said that Despite the challenges being faced because of the security situation in Libya, the Pakistani Embassy in Libyan capital Tripoli will continue to work for the release of all imprisoned Pakistanis in Libya and ensure their safe repatriation.
The statement was released two days after the 7th special flight since August 13, 2014 arrived in Lahore with 260 Pakistanis from Libya.
The government has been operating the special flights to bring back Pakistani nationals stranded in Libya which faces a challenge to its government by radical group ‘Dawn of Libya militia’.
Until now 1,987 Pakistanis have been brought back to Pakistan.
