Death toll expected to rise as more than two dozen are still missing and many more are trapped under the wreckage

At least 21 people died and several others were injured Tuesday as the roof of a mosque in Daroghawala area collapsed. The death toll is expected to rise as more than 25 people are still missing and over 30 are reportedly still trapped under the debris.

According to details, the incident took place near a flour mill at AS Stop in Daroghawala, when a double-storey mosque’s roof collapsed when worshippers were offering Zuhr prayers.

Locals began the rescue operation and tried to extract those trapped under the rubble by themselves. Later, rescue officials also joined in but machinery to navigate through the wreckage could not be brought to the site as the roads leading to the collapsed mosque were very narrow. The trapped people are being evacuated with the help of roof cutters.

As many as 10 injured worshippers were taken to hospital and more injuries are feared as over 30 people are still trapped under the wreckage.

Senior government officials also reached the site to oversee the rescue operation.

Taking note of the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed the authorities to provide quality medical care to the injured.

President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chairman Altaf Hussain have expressed grief over the incident which occurred in the backdrop of massive destruction caused by heavy rains and floods in Punjab.
