SSUET’s monsoon contingency report released

The Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) released a monsoon contingency report here on Tuesday as part of its public service campaign in which it aims to assist the civil administration and the government. An official of the institution said the purpose of the report was to aid the metropolis’ administration prior to and during the monsoon season. He said with monsoon around the corner, a robust contingency plan by the civil administration was in the final stages of completion in which the university was providing all the required assistance It was pointed out that the provincial capital receives an average 200 mm rains in the July – September period while every now and then the city received above normal rainfall which trashed all the governments plans.

The SSUET report claimed that in the absence of a proper storm drainage system, the city was at risk especially in the monsoon season. The unplanned urbanization, the spread of slum communities and the destruction of swamps had all put Karachi in harms way. Regarding the improper sanitation arrangements ,the official said that missing manhole covers and damaged electricity pylons posed a considerable threat to the lives of Karachittes.

According to the report, the Karachi Municipal Committee (KMC) and other civic agencies needed to take immediate and coordinated steps to avoid inconvenience and in the worst cases , injuries or loss of lives. The need for the refurbishment and procurements of necessary equipment was also stressed upon in the report
