The PML-N government, on directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that it had detailed a mechanism for register a treason case against former dictator Pervez Musharraf and a committee would be formed to collect evidence against the accused.

The reply was submitted with the apex court by Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Ali Zai on behalf of the federation of Pakistan.

The reply states that Prime Minister Nawaz has directed the interior secretary to contact FIA DG for the formation of a high-level investigation team. The team will be tasked with probing the November 3, 2007 actions of Pervez Musharraf.

The prime minister also ordered that the team should consist of reputed officers and the task should be completed at the earliest. He also directed that besides the investigating team, a commission may also be formed to effectively monitor the probe.

The notification for the treason case was issued by the prime minister’s principal secretary.

On June 24, the prime minister had announced that Musharraf would be tried for treason under Article 6 of the constitution. Musharraf is accused of subverting the constitution twice.

Soon after the decision, the apex court had set a three-day deadline to finalise a mechanism for treason trial. On Tuesday, Attorney General Munir A Malik held a special meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to finalise a mechanism for registering the treason case.

The Supreme Court had earlier declined a request by Malik to give the government a 30-day period to complete political consultations and finalise the mode of trial.

The retired general, who returned from four years of self-imposed exile in March, has been under house arrest at his farmhouse since April 19.

Musharraf faces charges of abrogating the constitution of Pakistan and detaining judges of the higher judiciary after imposing emergency on November 3, 2007.

A three-member apex court bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khwaja would take up the matter today (Thursday).
